 I don't think you are following the instructions correctly, because the
 script referenced there forces VFAT partitions. Or is livecd-iso-to-disk
 not honouring that request?

 I don't see value in supporting extlinux because I've seen systems in the
 past that refuse to boot from non-VFAT formatted USB disks. (wouldn't
 object to patches making it an option however)

 The generated syslinux is wrong however, as you observe, but the script
 overwrites it with a hardcoded config, so it shouldn't matter.
