Comment:

 it's certainly working.  jnettlet -- did you have specific performance
 concerns?  i assume we're still using the fast delta-driven repaint that
 mitch and bobby worked out a few years ago, so i'm not sure we'll find
 something that paints fewer bits.

 closing, since i suspect that's the right thing for now.
