 Hi Simon! the evidence you gathered is... exactly the opposite of what you
 describe in your conclusion. Having a long pause in interaction _is_ a
 valid use case; a teacher interrupts to explain something, or
 collaboration happens in the physical space for a few minutes (rather than
 computer mediated), etc.

 So we need that part of the workaround.

 We also need a presence sync, because presence does get out of sync. Any
 luck on that track?
