Comment:

 The problem that I originally missed was that this was messing with out-
 of-bounds coordinates that were then going to be "corrected" by a
 transformation.

 A transformation could also cause some out-of-bounds accesses, I guess,
 but it seems unlikely that we would hit such a case, so I've left that as
 unsolved.

 In the new patch (attached) we only mess with coordinates when there is no
 transformation applied. This is now working both with this test case and
 the issue in #12206.
