 On build 17,  kernel-3.5.4_xo4-20121207.1608.olpc.94bf241, the power
 button doesn't have any user-visible effect, but evtest can see button
 presses and releases.

 After updating to kernel-3.5.4_xo4-20121210.1138.olpc.3e686a5, the problem
 goes away.

 So I guess powerd/kbshim were confused by some of the other breakage in
 build 17's kernel and stopped recognising power button presses. I'll leave
 this open in case you want to investigate, otherwise just close it.
