 I thought this was arecord failing to start, and since we suppress stderr
 output we'd never see it in logs.  Samuel, please test by removing the
 #11366 workaround from runin-sound, and then looking at run.log and the
 sound log.

 Alternatively, try
 arecord --quiet --file-type raw --format dat --duration=60 /tmp/runin.raw

 Saadia: there's no reason why we need that format of recording, if there's
 another one we should use instead, we can change runin-sound.
