 looking under /var/lock while screen is running, i find no lock files at
 all.  running strace doesn't show any attempts at locking the tty.

 running minicom, i see that it creates /var/lock/LCK..ttyUSB0 as expected.
 but then, i'm running ubuntu on my desktop, so maybe that doesn't mean
 anything.
