 I am now using

 sed -ie 's/activity_version = .*/activity_version = 1/' \
 /home/olpc/Activities/Welcome.activity/activity/activity.info
 systemctl restart olpc-dm.service ;
 }}}

 Retried a few times, with sugar debugging enabled. Just to make it
 explicit: we are hanging when we attempt to close the window, the user
 having clicked the top-right "tick" button.
