Comment:

 This is something kernel related - or is at least triggered that way. Will
 see what we can learn on this front before bugging Mitch.

 Reproduced on olpc-2.6.35 with this config:
 http://dev.laptop.org/~dsd/20120806/config.12039.bad

 but not with this one (which we used for 11.3):
 http://dev.laptop.org/~dsd/20120806/config.12039.good

 now to bisect the differences.
