 Paul pointed it out: stop powerd and press the power button.

 However, we now realise you must be in GNOME for this to have an effect.
 Same with the lid.

 The issue here is more with gnome-settings-daemon rather than upower.
 gnome-settings-daemon listens for power key presses (via XI2) and lid
 switch events (via upower) and then asks upower to act on them. Both of
 these behaviours are hard-coded when their respective plugins are loaded
 (but plugin load is configurable).

 Asking upower to ignore the lid events is one way of solving the lid
 issue, but we're left with the power button problem.

 For the power button issue, I think it should be safe (and probably
 sensible) to disable the media-keys plugin from gnome-settings-daemon
 altogether. This also handles volume/brightness keys and so on, which we
 want to handle alone anyway, right? Does this sound OK?
