 Given all these broken applications, what would be the cost of writing a
 "broken" X server which presumed the screen was 96dpi & scaled everything
 by default?

 A custom font library which knew the true dpi could use a bypass API or
 flag to get sharp-looking text.

 This kludge would rely on the fact the screen already is sharper for black
 & white than it is for color, and the primary thing that needs to be sharp
 in B&W with fine edges is text.
