Comment:

 I didn't fix this bit:  something else is causing an early unfreeze and
 then an immediate thaw. it happens quite late, so i don't think it's a
 reinit of the SoC's gpio pins.

 and it was definitely still present when i made the fix, but i can't
 reproduce now. strange.
