 start clock, watch black ring around clock face, at the 9 and 3 o'clock
 positions, frequently the black pixels are cleared to white, then they
 return to black.  never occurs when the red seconds hand is drawn exactly
 horizontal or vertical.

 please reproduce and diagnose, my guess is X server.
