Comment(by Quozl):

 Daniel, last week I observed continual increase of VSZ of X process during
 runin testing over 48 hours. It was being caused by /runin/runin-gtk, and
 the rate of increase depended on the SIGUSR1 signal rate to the process.
 I was assured on IRC it was not a problem. Tony's problem on this ticket
 reminded me of it.

 Tony, I wonder if VSZ of the X process is continually increasing, and if
 the problem you have begins once this value reaches a particular
 threshold. The value can be seen in /proc/$(pidof X)/status as the line
 VmSize.
