Comment(by greenfeld):
Perhaps for non-fatal errors rsyslogd could just echo it somewhere like
something seems to do for Fedora setup/livecds. However this is disabled
by default, and not very helpful for most users.
The original misconception which led to this ticket was a B1 which ran the
kernel OOM killer while running runin, where I only spotted the kernel
warnings on the XO console and not in the serial logs for an unknown
reason. I then discovered text written to /dev/console and /dev/tty0
(character devices with different major/minor numbers) did not show up on
the serial port ttyS2.
According to the Linux kernel documentation this latter behavior is
expected {kernel messages to all, but only the last item specified is
considered /dev/console for usage}. I will try to force the OOM killer to
trigger and see if the issue persists tomorrow.
