Comment:

 We've decided to mark this a blocker even though we've frozen; for 11.2 we
 will readd the old activity updater that we have already shipped for a few
 years (I expect it will 'just work'), so this won't involve any addition
 of new code.

 For the near future, we will work on getting a decent solution upstream,
 perhaps based around work done by Anish and Sascha (perhaps a ticket
 should be opened on that front).
