My attempt to set the hostname based on the wifi MAC address (as done in
NM-0.6 in 8.2) for 10.1 was to read this during boot, set the hostname and
 modify /etc/hosts.

This doesn't work any more for F14, NetworkManager looks at
/etc/sysconfig/network, sees that no hostname has been set, so decides it
should pull one from the network. When you connect to a network, it uses
the hostname from your DHCP server.

Probably a minor point but I'll fix it anyway:
  * /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network will be added to statetab.d so
that we can modify those files at runtime without touching
 /versions/pristine.
  * During olpc root upgrades, olpc-configure will fix
/etc/sysconfig/network and /etc/hosts based on the machine being booted
