Comment(by martin.langhoff):

 The kernel from os4 was v2.6.36-139-ge7978440, built on cjb's cross-build
 host. I have just recompiled it on my cross-build host ('martin-tp') and
 it boots correctly on unit 44.

 This removes the build host as a variable - this recent kernel, built on
 martin-tp, won't boot on units with this issue:
 http://dev.laptop.org/~martin/xo1.75kernels/kernel-2.6.39_xo1.75-20110616.1726.olpc.cce4f0d.armv7l.rpm

 So the problem is likely to be triggered by something in the delta between
 2.6.36-139-ge7978440 and v2.6.39-97-gcce4f0d . Several things make
 bisection hard and (probably) useless.

 We need to trace or instrument the boot process somehow.
