 Okay, I've got it.  I can reproduce it on 2.6.36 by just dropping commits
 1440f8e, 0e98bdc, and 6ac1ac1 -- i.e. reverting Lennert's rewrite of the
 racy MMP2 timer code.

 When we rebased onto 2.6.37 this didn't merge at all cleanly anymore, and
 (if I recall; I may just be making this up) we decided to just drop those
 patches since they didn't seem to be necessary.

 So, one of us needs to bring those commits forward to 3.0-rc1.  Either
 Lennert or I doing it works, though perhaps it's better if Lennert does it
 so that he can submit them for 3.0 straight away?
