 Some additional information: Having had a skim through the source of the
 other activities we have using speech (Read, Memorize, Speak, Read
 ETexts), they all seem to have various implementations that use espeak to
 save out a wav file to storage (some use pipes, some write files to /tmp).
 They then separately try to play these wav themselves to audio, using
 gstreamer usually as far as I can tell. This makes sense for the above
 activities as they all need to have close access/control of the speech for
 draw animated mouths, or highlight words as they are spoken. This may well
 be how they are avoiding the espeak to audio issue.
