 I looked at this for a bit today and I think we are hitting a form of this
 upstream bug, https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25497

 We might not have been seeing it before because rendering was slow enough
 not to trigger the race condition.  It looks like there has not been much
 exploratory work on this, so I will have to dig into the X Server code and
 see what is happening.
