Comment:

 dsd states on IRC that "the difference from the cases where audio
 recording works is that Record records audio directly from the device
 memory area whereas arecord triggers an alternative code path in the
 kernel (a less efficient one)".  But he cannot get into Trac right now to
 say this.

 We may need kernel help on this ticket.
