Comment:

 Diagnosis: entirely firmware, looks easy to fix, not sure where to fix.

 ''select /audio'' is enough to reproduce this.

 The LED is powered from microphone bias signal from codec.

 ''dev /audio sound mic-bias-off sound-end'' demonstrates startup sound can
 be played without the LED remaining on.

 ''codec-on'' enables microphone bias by default.  Even with that patched
 out, ''mic-bias-on'' is called during ''init-codec''.

 At this point I'm lost.  The /audio device ''open'' method doesn't have a
 way to specify that the open is for input only.
