Comment(by Quozl):

 Diagnosis: temporary host to EC communication failure.

 Some of these symptoms can be reproduced by holding down the X game key on
 boot.

 But see the corruption of the banner-name property in the displayed
 banner; should be "OLPC 1B1" but is "OLPC pre000", and the corruption just
 prior to the EC version.
 Both these come from communication between OpenFirmware and the EC.

 "pre000" means the EC CMD_READ_BOARD_ID 0x19 returned zero. The EC
 version number is obtained using CMD_GET_FW_VER ... and if the attempt
 timed out then previous buffer contents might be used.

 ''Boot failed'' occurs if no signed image could be found for booting, and
 is only intended to occur if the laptop is booted in secure mode, either
 by wp tag or using the X game key. Our image isn't currently signed, so
 ''Boot failed'' is expected.

 Checking the game keys on XO-1.75 B1 uses GPIO access, no EC involvement.

 Might it be possible that you had the X game key down during power up?

 Or is the wp tag present?
