 What was the state of charge of your battery ?   The brightness of the
 LEDs depends directly on the charge level of the battery, and are
 brightest when plugged into an external power source.

 Personally, we already spend too much power on the LEDs, and low power is
 the most important design requirement.

 Changing the brightness of the LEDs in response to ambient lighting would
 require adding the ability to control the brightness of the LEDs, adding
 cost.

 Leaving open to record enhancement request, but won't fix.
