Comment:

 This is a feature, not a bug.

 We finally got enough of Richard's attention to verify that when you hold
 down the rotate key while booting the laptop, the EC enters a special
 debug mode in which it does not respond to the LPC bus.

 The hardware is powering up fine, but no code may be fetched from the SPI
 boot ROM.

 This is confirmed by the EC serial output (see above).   At time 14084 it
 prints: "ARTEC Mode Enabled.  No FWH (Firmware Hub) response"
