Comment:

 Tested on XO-1.5 with 10.1.2, the /dev/dsp device is present and works
 fine, therefore this is an inconsistency between XO-1 and XO-1.5.

 Alternate workaround from #6353 also works on XO-1 with 10.1.2:

 cd /dev
 sudo ./MAKEDEV dsp
 }}}

 or
 {{{
 sudo mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3
 }}}

 An advantage of this workaround is that the snd-{pcm,mixer}-oss kernel
 modules are not loaded unless an application opens the device.
