 The register restoring is a lot more intelligent than I thought. It takes
 that into account, more or less.

 The problem here is that the video palette is not being backed up
 correctly.

 After it is written in the X driver I can read the palette back fine. But
 by the time we get into kernel level, bad values are being read back.

 This bug never appeared before because X never set gamma correction. It
 does now (but defaults to no correction in the programmed values).
