 attaching revised patch with proper formatting.

 jon, daniel -- does this look okay to you?  mavrothal claims it works,
 and, as he points out, pre-10.1.3 would be a good time to get it in place.
 the patch is identical to that submitted by jon for the 1.5 spec in #10113
