 re: a file -- that would of course be fine by me, but i don't pretend to
 know exactly how mdns/sharing/collaboration works, and whether the file
 solution is practical.

 re: the port -- after a reboot, port 5298 is no longer bound, by avahi-
 daemon or anyone else.  i have no idea what's changed, except that the
 machine was up longer before, and had been carried to and used in various
 locations.  (see my comment above about how much i know about this part of
 the laptop stack.)  but it really did go away as soon as i killed avahi-
 daemon, last time.
