is there a way to make this check cheaper, for example by having salut
somehow leave an indication that it's in use? or, can we detect in-use
some other way? does it create any sort of temp file, or unix-domain
socket? if not, then i guess this is okay.
also, is this the correct solution on both xo-1 and 1.5?
