Comment:

 ES is faster; the problem with EN is that it includes many more templates,
 which get rendered as if they were individual pages.

 We could just disable templates altogether for EN.  It would get much
 faster, but you'd lose things like factboxes that are often the
 information that people are specifically looking for in an article.
