Comment:

 Good, symptom reproduced.

 The lack of need to enlarge the picture was not relevant to the symptom.

 With the data stream I was using, removing -cache 8192 caused jerkiness
 which corresponded to periods of SD write.  By allowing mplayer to
 maintain a large cache, these periods of SD write that would stall SD
 reads no longer affected the playback rate.
