Comment:

 OK, we can close this on the OLPC side. As embarrassing as it is, it
 turned out I just forgot to add the XO-1.5 to the MAC filter.
 Better error messages than just "failed" would have been quite useful -
 dsd translated the 0xc error code from the debug logs to "Association
 denied due to reason outside the scope of this standard" for me, which
 reminded me about the MAC filter. AFAICT that needs to be fixed in
 wpa_supplicant and/or NetworkManager, though.
