I agree, sad to need Xephyr.
The hard reason is not the cursor but "shrinking" the desktop size. I
expected that if I defined a Virtual that is smaller than the pixels of
the monitor, X would make a "small desktop", maybe centered. It doesn't,
it looks for a Mode that is <= than the Virtual, and freaks out if it
doesn't find it.
So Xephyr is my poor-man's way of shrinking the desktop (people at xorg
lists haven't been able to suggest anything better). I don't think the
perf impact is big (remove it to see) and it brings the nice cursor as a
'nice to have'.
Maybe we can push for a fix to X so that Virtual being smaller than X
expects does something sensible, but that'd be far far away...
