 Here is a little test script:

 The test alternates green and red screens.  Without the workaround, the
 alternation will visibly "stutter" every so often, displaying one of the
 colors for too long.  With the workaround, there is no stutter.

 On my system, the mean time between stutters is about 20 or 30
 repetitions, but it varies a lot.  Sometimes, especially when the system
 is warm, it will go hundreds of repetitions with a stutter.
