 On notifying the tray icon that the levels have changed ... ALSA has an
 API for notification of mixer changes, see [http://www.alsa-project.org
 /alsa-doc/alsa-lib/group___mixer.html#g7eec8c8d8916e08388c0dd66d44477ee
 snd_mixer_poll_descriptors].  The file descriptor can then be monitored by
 the main event loop.

 Both pyalsaaudio and pyglet contain code that reference this part of the
 ALSA API.
