Comment:

 I've tried to reproduce this and failed.  I suspect something is different
 about your filesystem.  Could you describe the history of the filesystem?
 Have you done any yum updates?

 Tests: os108, os200, able to start firefox from Terminal and Gnome desktop
 fine.
