Comment:

 In our stack inherited from Fedora the network connection is a function of
 the desktop, not of the underlying operating system ... which is why
 switching between Sugar and Gnome gives you different results.  That's
 normal.

 So let's concentrate only on either Sugar or Gnome.

 I've tested both and not been able to reproduce these problems.

 Could you choose one of the problems and let me know what it does?
