 I've since explored the ALSA API a bit further; in addition to choosing a
 rate that the card supports (or accepting the ALSA resampling via plughw),
 the application must also (a) keep up with reading the data from ALSA
 during recording, never falling behind, and (b) exactly keep up with
 writing data during playback.  So if the rates are defined in the
 application, they might also be used for timing of PCM read and write; if
 so they must match across the application.
