Thanks for confirming.
I think in both Etoys and Scratch the sampling rate is set in
SoundRecorder>>initialize (I will check the XO version tomorrow). The
44100 rate must be specific to the XO because on my notebook Scratch is
set to 22050 while Etoys is set to 11025.

Possibly because there is less going on so fewer interrupts? Could also be
that full duplex is enabled in Scratch hence even more interrupts. I find
arecord/aplay good for checking that audio is functioning but they cannot
give any indication of possible problems under high IO loads.
