 thank you.  in fact, my last words to chris as i left the office were "i
 think we need to look at the code", and i was just sitting down to do
 that.  i was hoping it might be safe because after pulling the plug in the
 middle, the filesystem came up clean, and i believe has a size somewhere
 between it's old size and the new requested size.  but moving the inode
 table in place doesn't sound good.

 as for "-o remount,resize", the mount man page only documents that option
 for jfs and reiserfs.  i doubt it would be easier for the kernel to do it
 for ext2/3 than for resize2fs.
