Comment:

 i think the attached varlogsize.patch to increase the permissible size of
 /var/log is the right solution.

 i notice that /var/tmp, and now /var/log, ends up getting mounted twice:
 once due to inclusion in /etc/rwtab (the contents of which are mounted via
 /etc/rc.sysinit), and once due to inclusion in fstab.  i'm not sure how
 harmful this is -- i believe the fstab mount happens later, and so hides
 the smaller mount done via rwtab, but if we're concerned we could also
 edit them out of rwtab.

 i can commit, but i think i need privs.
