 Testing on XO-1.5 ... attaching an 80Gb IDE USB disk with 21667 files
 causes a burst of CPU and I/O by a process gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor which
 attempts to stat every file.  This takes a minute or two.  Once this has
 completed, the datastore service is momentarily active and then the
 journal displays the icon for the disk.

 Testing the same on XO-1 build 802 ... there is short burst of activity by
 the datastore service.

 I've not concluded anything meaningful from this.
