 In your comment here on the bugtracker, it looks like you have spaces
 around the = sign. Bash / shell are a bit strange with variable
 assignments:

   # valid
   FOO=somestring
   # invalid
   FOO = somestring

 What I can recommend is that you

 * cp .xsession-example .xsession
 * edit .xsession to remove the # char in front of the line

 which is what I usually do to avoid accidental mistypes...
