 On a cold morning (19C), since the problem seems to go away once the
 environment heats up, tested an external SD card (an ADATA 4 GB microSDHC
 in a Transcend adapter), followed by internal microSD card (as supplied
 with the XO-1.75).

 Symptom did not occur on the external card, but did occur on the internal
 card.  This suggests the fault is with either the internal slot or the
 internal card.
