Comment:

 It looks like there was an ALPS detection change in
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Firmware_q3a60 which may or may not be the
 root cause.  I was testing with AVC and Synaptics touchpads (and we want
 to support all three with the 1.5 motherboard IIRC).
