this is probably the root cause behind #9631 as well.

i believe the dcon driver is the right place for this unfreeze. or, at
least, it's always been there, and other than the glitch, it works fine.
no unfreeze is done at user-level, so without the one in olpc-dcon, we'd
have to invent something new.
