 nice detective work.  i wish i had realized/remembered when you first
 started working on this the other day that we already knew about this.  i
 think i spent so much time on 9664 that i forgot about #9631.  yes,
 there's definitely a h/w issue of some sort that causes the unfreeze to
 happen too early.  :-/
