 I don't recall any discussion about a new video driver, and I think that
 wider discussion is merited before one is adopted.

 But if this direction does get finalized, the kernel patch looks OK, but
 I'd request that brief test instructions get included in the commit
 message (how could the bug in question be reproduced before the patch?)
